‘Familiarity’ locks Waterhouse, Dunbeholden into stalemate
Waterhouse Football Club's assistant coach, Jermaine Miller, says familiarity between the teams made their matchup against Dunbeholden an extremely tough one, contributing to their 0-0 Jamaica Premier League (JPL) scoreline at Drewsland Mini Stadium on Sunday.
Dunbeholden FC consists of a number of former Waterhouse coaches and players.
"It was a difficult game because of familiarity," Miller said. "We wanted to create some chances from the wide areas. They brought their wingers very deep and it nullified what we were doing.
"We tried through the central areas and it was difficult. They did a wonderful defensive job to prevent us from creating a lot of chances," Miller said.
Waterhouse came into yesterday's round of matches in fourth, but changed places with Cavalier, who moved up to 13 points after a 3-0 win over Spanish Town Police FC in the opening game of a doubleheader at the Drewsland venue. Waterhouse are on 12 points.
SECOND DRAW
It was the second straight draw for Waterhouse.
"The objective is to win games so whenever we come out we work hard for three points," he said " Today (Sunday) we didn't create enough chances."
Waterhouse dictated the tempo in the first half, but they were frustrated by a well organised Dunbeholden defence.
Dunbeholden had a few good openings but failed to really trouble Akeem Bernard in goal.
Dunbeholden continued to stifle Waterhouse's attacks in the second half and became more of an attacking threat the more the half stretched on.
Nicholson Nelson should have put the visitors in front in the 56th minute after he broke through on goal, but he slammed his effort against the crossbar.
Waterhouse's first real opening came in the 67th minute when Ajuma Johnson broke through after playing a one-two, but he poked the chance wide of the near post.
At the other end, Nelson had another great chance with eight minutes to go, but this time Chambers blocked his effort for a corner.
BEST MOMENT
Atapharoy Bygrave had Waterhouse's best moment, when the ball came to him three yards out, but he hit straight at Jean-Luke Wilmot, who turned the ball away from goal.
Dunbeholden's assistant coach, Calvert Fitzgerald said the only thing missing from making it a perfect performance for his team was a goal.
"The game went exactly how we thought it would go. We did exactly what we were supposed to do. We were just missing the end product," he said.
"We know Nicholas is a very talented striker and quick... He got away twice but wasn't able to finish," he added.
The game between Chapelton Maroons and Molynes United at Turner's Oval, Chapelton, was postponed due to inclement weather and a waterlogged field.
