NEPA slams ‘gruesome’ attack on crocodile

September 30, 2025

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has launched an investigation into a disturbing video showing individuals hurling stones at a crocodile.

The agency has condemned the act, describing it as cruel and illegal, and is reminding the public that anyone caught harming the protected species can face fines of up to $3 million or imprisonment for as long as one year under the Wild Life Protection Act.

NEPA explained that crocodiles are often displaced from their natural habitats during heavy rains, such as those experienced recently. In most cases, the reptiles will eventually return to wetlands on their own, but people are urged not to provoke them, as the animals may become defensive. Instead, sightings or potential threats should be reported directly to NEPA at 876-754-7540 or toll-free at 888-991-5005.

Reports can also be made to 119 or the nearest police station.

The agency stressed that it takes these matters seriously and will move to prosecute offenders.

"Members of the public are, therefore, being cautioned to take heed as the agency will take steps to prosecute," NEPA said.
