WASHINGTON:

Antigua and Barbuda's Ambassador to the Organisation of American States (OAS), Sir Ronald Sanders, says the electoral defeat of former St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves does nothing to diminish his significant contribution to Caribbean development.

"I have known Dr Ralph Gonsalves since before he succeeded Sir James 'Son' Mitchell as Prime Minister. I worked with both men and admired and respected them in different ways, but they shared one important quality -- an unwavering commitment to Caribbean unity," Sanders said.

He described Gonsalves as "an intellectual giant of the Caribbean", noting that his writings, speeches, lectures, and public statements have served as invaluable lessons on the importance of regional integration.

"He is steadfast in that commitment and diligent in inspiring others with his passion. The region, as a collective, owes him full recognition for his care and courage," Sanders added.

Acknowledging the outcome of the November 27 general election, Sanders said, "The people of St Vincent and the Grenadines spoke decisively, and the will of the people must always be respected."

He stressed that Gonsalves' stature and reputation as a champion of the Caribbean people remain intact.

"He continues to deserve our deep respect, even as we wish the new government every success in its stewardship of the nation's affairs," Sanders said. - CMC
